Nevertheless, safety, efficiency and, not least, driving pleasure demand that its performance should never be less than, let us say, authoritative. The Safrane offers two engines which more than satisfy that requirement. The first is a 2.0 litre, 16-valve unit which delivers 138 bhp and 0 to 62-mph time of just 10.5 seconds. The second is a superb 2.5 litre, 20 valve, 168 bhp, five-cylinder power plant which produces performance of an even higher order. A 4-speed automatic gearbox, incorporating a 'Sports' mode, is supplied as standard with the 2.5 litre engine and is also available with the 2.0 litre unit.
